Fatuma Mohamed Achani

Fatuma Mohamed Achani is the Governor of Kwale County, Kenya, and the first Muslim woman to hold such a position in the country. Born in Kingwede village, Msambweni, she pursued law at Moi University and later qualified as an advocate of the High Court after training at the Kenya School of Law. Before entering politics, she worked with organizations such as FIDA-Kenya and the International Republican Institute, focusing on governance and women’s rights. In 2013, she became Deputy Governor of Kwale under Salim Mvurya, serving two terms before being elected Governor in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. Her leadership has emphasized water projects, agricultural development, healthcare improvements, and women and youth empowerment. Despite facing challenges such as financial scrutiny and gender bias, she remains a trailblazer in Kenyan politics, inspiring many as part of the group of seven female governors elected in 2022.
